management development programme

Aims of the programme

This is a longer term development programme for managers with six to twelve months experience in the role.  It provides participants with an opportunity to explore and practise basic skills which underpin management best practice.

Overview of the Modules

 

Module 1 – The Nature of your Job (2 days)

Provides an opportunity to examine an effective manager’s role and includes time management; team development; team roles and dynamics; the difference between management and leadership; the effective manager.

Module 2 – Interpersonal Skills (2 days)

Explores the importance of good communication to be effective.  It includes questioning, listening and giving feedback; barriers to communication; body language; influencing skills; assertiveness; handling conflict; managing meetings.

Module 3 – Training and Development (2 days)

Explores the manager’s role in training and development.  It includes training cycles; identifying training needs; development planning; coaching; choosing training methods; delivery of training.

Module 4 – Human Resource Management (2 days)

Explores the manager’s role in relation to HR processes and responsibilities.  It includes recruitment; induction; employment legislation; discipline and grievance; performance management; health and safety.

Module 5 – Managing Finance (1 day)

Raises awareness of how finance works, management financial accountability and controlling costs. It includes the organisation’s financial systems, processes and profitability.  This module can include a short project to save costs to the organisation.

Module 6 – Managing change (2 days)

Examines change management and includes strategies for change; resistance to change; implementing change; motivation theory; motivational skills.

Module 7 – Pulling It All Together (Up to 2 days)

Brings together Modules 1 to 6 to enable managers to approach their job in a more effective way.  It includes action planning; personal development planning; preparation for formal presentation of learning given to line managers.
